65 Years of loving your baby’s skin.
60-some years ago, Baby Magic debuted a revolutionary ad campaign, “For Every Lady In Waiting.” Featuring designer maternity wear and actual expectant mothers, today it’s remembered for both its sense of style and its courageous realism (in the 50’s, imagery of pregnant women was still very much not done).
To celebrate our 65th anniversary, we’re revisiting and updating that same campaign, this time with a sight as unusual in modern infant care ads as baby bumps were in the 50’s: dads.
Side-by-side with the original 1958 images, and featuring four real-life dads-to-be, we present,
Dads in the Making.
Kyle Hilla, named D Magazine’s “Best Bartender in Dallas”, knits some booties for his first child, due in January. If you haven’t tried his legendary Badlands cocktail at the Theodore in Dallas, put that on your to-do-list right now. And don’t forget to tip (hipster-grade yarn isn’t cheap.)
Jon Song paints a nursery a sunny blue in preparation for his new arrival, due any minute. Jon has a special connection to Baby Magic as the director of business development for Baby Magic and its sister brands across Asia and North America. He’s super busy and super modest, so he was reluctant to join our photo shoot until we told him it was catered and would get him out of the office for a good three hours. He just said, “you had me at catered.”
Julian Pastrana crafts a crib for his soon-to-be-born child. A woodworker and online purveyor of fine, hand-crafted hardwood furniture and home goods, Julian definitely doesn’t dress like this in his shop – but maybe he should consider it, because look at him. Look at his work, while you’re at it, too. It’s stunning. pastranastudio.com
Kirk Thurmond takes a break from packing while converting his practice room to a nursery. As front man for Kirk Thurmond and the Millennials, Kirk is wrapping up production on his second album just in time for his first child, both of which are due any day now. Pre-order Kirk’s sophomore album, People Change, on DEFDISCO today, you won’t regret it.
*since we wrote this, Kirk and Bri welcomed Ira Wright Thurmond to the world. Congrats!
